Bonne Annee tout le monde! (Happy New Year)
I have started my year by watching a movie with my dear sister. We watched The Impossible starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. A heart wrenching movie, a story based on one family's survival of the 2004 Tsunami.
Fact: On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive tsunami caused by an undersea earthquake in
the Indian Ocean left more than 230,000 people dead or missing in
countries throughout Southeast Asia.
Based on a true story of Alvarez Belon family, a vacationing family whose lives are threatened by the tsunami.
Synopsis:
Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons
begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days
in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family
relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night
before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As
Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel
grounds toward her. Based on a true story, THE IMPOSSIBLE is the
unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of
strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our
time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays
of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family
encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and
intimate, devastating and uplifting, THE IMPOSSIBLE is a journey to the
core of the human heart.
this film had an emotional impact on me. I was in tears throughout the film. What made me more emotional is that it is based on a real life story- the true account of how the Alvarez Belon family survived the disaster. Naomi Watts and Tom Holland (mother-son) bond is one of the significant aspect of the movie. The film portrays on how mother will do everything to protect his son. truly, Naomi, Tom and Ewan acting is exceptional.
from the title itself, its truly impossible that all of them survived the catastrophe. Maria thought that she lost her family, but she was given hope when she found out that his eldest son Lucas was alive. On the other hand, Henry (the husband) was also alive and found Tomas on a tree and he heard Simon calling his name.
While holding on a branch of tree, I can feel Maria's pain when she was screaming out loud thinking that she already lost her family, but when she heard Lucas she swim out to reach for him not minding the few hits of debris. She even pretend that she is fine for the sake of her son.
Holland gave a standout performance on this movie. He played Lucas, the eldest son. In the beginning of the movie, he was a distant son, but when the disaster came he became a stronger son to help and protect her mother.
I am happy that this is the first film I watched for this year. This film will make you treasure your family more, will make you realize that life is really short, and how life can end in a snap of a finger.
